I was inspired by the Crows that have been visiting my backyard lately. Crows are beautiful and intelligent birds. I am fascinated by their problem solving skills and their strong memories. They remember people and even hold grudges! I always hope to stay on their good side.  They are often associated with darkenss, sadness, and bad times, but I don't feel that way about them. With this painting, I attempted to bring out the hidden color found in their feathers. It's a way to show that even darkness has it's beauty. 

This is a very interpretive painting style that is somewhat unfamiliar to me and quite the challenge. I went for bold, painterly brushstrokes, with an effort to resist blending too much. I applied thick layers of color and left the background underdefined, I let the underpainting guide me and made decisions based on how the colors behaved together on the canvas.
